Introduction:
The V3PS is a high performance 10 Gigabit Ethernet Switch based on the 3U OpenVPX™ (VITA 65) form factor. Offered in both convection cooled and ruggedized conduction cooled variants, the V3PS will meet the needs of numerous commercial and military applications requiring maximum switch flexibility with minimum latency, maximum processing power, and low power consumption, all in a small physical footprint.

At the heart of the V3PS is a Fulcrum 'ALTA' series device, a fully integrated 24-Port single-chip wire-speed 10 Gigabit Ethernet Switch. It includes enhanced features such as L2/L3/L4 packet classification, routing, tunneling, class of service provisioning and congestion management. The ALTA provides the switch fabric for backplane data and control planes. The V3PS also has a front panel QSFP port for high-bandwidth uplink support.

An Intel© Core™ I7 Arrandale Processor and Ibex Peak QM57 Platform Controller Hub (PCH) form the data processing backbone of the V3PS. With a memory controller integrated in the processor, the V3PS supports up to 2 GBytes of DDR3 SDRAM running at up to 1066 MHz. The processor utilizes its PCI Express (PCIe) port to connect to the ALTA 10GE switch management port.

The QM57 PCH utilizes the following interfaces in the V3PS: PCI Express; PCI; Serial ATA (SATA); Universal Serial Bus; VGA;, SMBus, and LPC Bus. One x4 PCIe port is routed to the XMC J15 connector per VITA 42.3. One x4 PCIe port is routed to an Intel© 82580 Quad Gigabit Ethernet Controller providing a CPU path into both the payload switch fabric as well as local DXM I/O via the XMC J16 connector. A 32-bit 33MHz PCI bus provides support for a PMC module. One SATA port is routed to the backplane and one to the XMC J16 connector. One USB port is routed to the front panel, one to the backplane, and one to the XMC J16 connector. One additional SATA port is connected to an SM2242 Flash Controller to support 16GBytes of solid state storage. Two 32Mbit SPI PROMs provide 8MBytes of in-circuit programmable boot code. A VGA interfaces provide graphics output capability via backplane RTM connections. Finally, the PCH LPC bus is connected to a Super I/O chip, a Trusted Platform Module, and the XMC J16 connector.

The V3PD supports the Dynatem Expansion Module (DXM) which provides debug and programming headers as well as front panel I/O expansion. Please refer the DXM Data Sheet for additional information.

The V3PS adheres to the OpenVPX™ standard for a 3U Switch Module Profile designated as MOD3-SWH-6F6U-16.4.1-5.
